Aquatherm System

When the University of South Florida (USF) required replacement piping for their Data Center, Friedrich Watkins Company and BCH Mechanical were contracted for the project. It was important to USF that they installed a product that was green, or environmentally friendly.

Due to the fact that the computer servers were in the room, USF also needed to be certain that the piping installed would not leak, and the working area for installation was quite small. After reviewing several options, they decided to install an Aquatherm system over a traditional copper or steel.

Unlike other products that use glues, fluxes, and solders, this system uses heat to fuse the ends together at a molecular level. This eliminates the need for gluing, sweating, or welding. It’s also recyclable and lasts longer than traditional systems. The work was performed in a confined area; the piping was under the floor and could only be accessed by removing the floor tiles. Despite this, they were able not only to meet the schedule but finish ahead of time because they were able to move so quickly. It is unlikely that would have been possible using a welded steel system.

Another great feature is that the pipe comes pre-insulated. There is a layer of insulation embedded in the pipe between the two layers of polypropylene. This eliminates the need to insulate in most installations. This system may become an industry standard due to it’s high quality, affordable price, and green characteristics.
