Gopher Resource Corporation is one of America’s leading recyclers of lead. The existing facility in Tampa currently recycles 32,000 pounds of lead per year, primarily from spent lead-acid batteries and other lead bearing materials. The majority of the lead reclaimed is utilized in the production of new automobile and industrial batteries, but can also be found in nuclear and X-ray shielding equipment and leaded glass computer screens and TVs.
BCH performed the plumbing, storm tank piping and pumps, storm drainage, sanitary and domestic water and gas piping scope for the project. Many precautions had to be taken by the construction crews due to the potentially hazardous properties of lead and acid, including frequent blood tests, HAZWOPER training, use of respirators, Tyvec suits, booties, etc. Keeping lead out of the waste stream was also a critical part of the process at Envirofocus.
